How It's Done!
Denice has developed a method for learning to fiddle that sets the student up for success!
Students are taught aurally so that they will learn the feel and spirit of fiddling. Learning by ear has proven to be the best way to develop keen ears which are essential to playing in tune on the violin. Learning melodies and playing them from memory allows the student to expand their level of repertoire as skills and mastery are developed.
Both Denice's oldest children were taught in this manner.
Denice is currently working to publish her fiddle method as a teaching/learning companion to the book Anthology of Contest Fiddle Tunes. Her method book will assist Suzuki students and teachers as they explore the tunes in this book. Her daughter Aarun is featured on the CD which is included. (Aarun is a National Champion!) This collection of tunes arranged by Joe Carr is a true authentic and thoughtful example of Texas Style Contest fiddling repertoire. Denice has chosen this as her primary resource for her fiddle students. Techniques needed to master these tunes are developed through presentation of specific teaching points taught to her students in Suzuki books 1 - 3. As students explore both genres, skills needed are taught sequentially, building left hand and bowing technique in a way that cements them. Her method is helpful to Suzuki teacher's as it explains what teaching points must be presented to the Suzuki student in order for them to fiddle with proficiency. Economy of movement is an essential skill needed in fiddling. Through early instruction of this skill, students agility and intonation abilities will benefit. Since repetition is needed to solidify proper technique, having two avenues to perfect these skills is opportune! The two reinforce each other!
